Copying (Archiving), Moving and Renaming LOGDRAFT and Soil Test Project Files
Last Revised December 18, 2015
This document provides instructions on moving or copying your LOGDRAFT or
soil test project files (these are the files created to hold boring log and
laboratory testing data).
Creating an Archive Copy of a Project to a Different Folder
- The first step is to figure out which directory is being used to
store your projects. If you don't know this, start your GEOSYSTEM package,
select "Project" > "Open" then drop down the
"Look in" box to see the folder path to where you last opened
a project -- this will likely be where you're saving your projects.
Make a note of the directory you found,
then close the program.
- Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the directory which you noted from step 1.
If you've found the correct directory you'll find folders that have
the names you've given to your projects, with a .GEO extension. (For example,
if you've named your project BERTHOUD COUNTY LANDFILL then
the directory will show a folder named BERTHOUD COUNTY LANDFILL.GEO).
All of the BERTHOUD COUNTY LANDFILL project's files
are in that folder.
- You can use drag-and-drop or the cut/copy/paste Explorer options
to delete or move the entire folder. For example, to make an archive copy of your project,
right-click on your project folder and select "Copy".
Next, navigate to your archive folder then right-click on the
list of files and select "Paste".
Here are some cautionary notes:
- While you can safely right-click on a project folder and select "Delete"
to delete an entire project, do not delete individual files within the
project folder. Doing so is guaranteed to render your project unusable.
- Do not copy or paste a project into an existing directory which ends
in a .GEO extension. (For example, do not paste BERTHOUD COUNTY LANDFILL.GEO
into a folder called MYPROJECTS.GEO.)
Making a Copy of a Project in the Same Folder
If you want to make a copy of your project in the same folder, follow these instructions:
- Follow Steps 1 and 2 from the previous section.
- Find your project in the directory, right-click on it and select "Copy", then right-click anywhere else in the file pane and select "Paste". You should now have a new folder with the same name as your project, but ending in " - Copy".
- Right-click on the copy and select "Rename".
- Give the new folder whatever name you'd like your second project to
have. Note: whatever name you select, it must end in
.GEO
Moving a Project to a New Computer
With the previous instructions in mind, here's how to move a project to a new
computer using a USB key:
- On the old computer, once you've found your project's location using
Explorer, right-click on your project folder and select "Copy".
- Sill on your old computer in Explorer, navigate to the USB key then right-click and select
"Paste".
- Plug the USB key into your new machine.
- On the new machine, open Windows Explorer and navigate to the USB
key.
- Right-click on the .GEO folder and select "Copy".
- Navigate to the directory where you want to place the project on your new
computer, right-click and select "Paste".
Renaming A Project
You can rename your project by right-clicking on the folder and
selecting "Rename". Note that you must leave the
.GEO at the end of the new name. (For example, you could rename
the directory discussed above to BERTHOUD CITY LANDFILL.GEO but
you cannot rename it to BERTHOUD CITY LANDFILL.)
- You can also do this from Data Manager version 5's "Project"
> "Open" dialog by simply right-clicking on the project you want
to rename, then selecting "Rename". This is actually a safer method
as the program will not let you leave off the ".GEO" at the end of
your folder name.
